Golden Archer Nominees

The 5th graders at Meadowview Intermediate participate in the Golden Archer Award process. In the fall, they are introduced to the nominated books in the Intermediate category. Multiple copies are purchased for the LMC, and they are encouraged to read all the nominees during the school year. In the spring, they vote for their favorite, and their votes are sent to the state Golden Archer committee. They also get to nominate books for the upcoming year's award.

Last year's winner was Champ by Marcia Thornton Jones. It is an excellent story about a show dog whose leg must be amputated after a car accident. The owner wants to put the dog to sleep, but a young boy decides to adopt it. The boy's relationship to his dog creates challenges and opportunities that test his character. It came in 2nd in our school vote; our favorite was Punished by David Lubar.

This year's nominated book titles are: Swindle by Gordon Korman, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo, No Talking by Andrew Clements, The Invention of Hugo Cabret (which also won the Caldecott Award) by Brian Selznick, and Marley: A Dog Like No Other by John Grogan. Happy reading!

September News

September is off to a busy start here at the MVI LMC. All classes have had a chance to come in and check out books, and we have received our first shipment of new books. We are very excited to add iPods and ebooks to our collection this year. Also, our new SmartBoard will enhance instruction.

For the first couple of months, all classes will receive weekly lessons in some basic skills. After that, we will start working with the classroom teachers on research and technology projects. Students have been challenged to Chalk One Up For Reading by completing ten books this first month. It will be fun to see how many are up for the challenge.
